4 Midfielders Arsenal Can Sign During the January Transfer Window

Arsenal have struggled to reach the levels expected of them this season due in large part to their inconsistency and a lack of stability in the middle of the park.

On that note, here’s a look at four players the Gunners can sign in January to boost their midfield set-up;

Blaise Matuidi

Matuidi has made a name for himself as one of the best box-to-box midfielders in Europe. He has earned the right to be called world-class following his exploits for PSG, Juventus and the French national team which has seen him lift multiple league titles along with a coveted world cup trophy.

Matuidi has the experience required to dominate literally any midfield set-up in the world. He boasts of Kante-esque work rates, pace, as well as the ability to orchestrate plays from deep.

His contract is set to expire in the summer, but Juventus are keen on offering him an extension, hence Arsenal would have to offer him a great deal to lure him from Turin.

Matuidi would be a welcome addition to Arsenal’s midfield considering the fact that the Gunners are lacking a reliable player who can keep things tidy in the middle of the park.

Ever Banega

Ever Banega has proven to be one of the most consistent midfield maestros in La Liga since his return to Sevilla in 2017.

Now 31 years old, Banega is going into the twilight of his career but he remains a quality player capable of dictating the tempo of games and creating goalscoring opportunities for his teammates.

Defensively, Banega isn’t the best, but for a team like Arsenal that has struggled to overwhelm teams in the same manner they did under Arsene Wenger, Banega could serve as a stopgap option for a creative midfielder capable of controlling the flow of games.

Giacomo Bonaventura

An expert passer of the ball, a sublime dribbler and an all-round midfield maestro, Giacomo Bonaventura could very well be the player Arsenal needs to rediscover their form going into the second half of the Premier League campaign.

Since joining AC Milan back in 2014, Bonaventura has made a name for himself as one of the best italian midfielders in the Serie A.

Despite Milan’s inconsistency over the past few years, Bonaventura has been able to stand out as a consistent performer often creating chances and serving as a creative force in Milan’s midfield set-up.

Being 30-years-old, Bonaventura is not expected to command a hefty transfer fee, thus making him an excellent option for Arsenal once the January transfer window opens up.

Nemanja Matic

Nemanja Matic is the only player on this list with Premier League experience, and as such, could very well be the best option for Arsenal going into the January transfer window.

Matic has been frozen out of United’s squad since the start of the season with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferring the likes of Scott McTominay and Fred over the former Chelsea man.

Matic is currently linked with a move to Tottenham with Jose Mourinho reportedly keen on reuniting with the Serbian.

Manchester United have placed a £15m price tag on Matic, but it remains to be seen if the Gunners can lure Matic to the Emirates Stadium.
