In their penultimate Champions League group game, Liverpool’s defensive woes hit a new low. They were 3-0 up against Sevilla and somehow managed to draw 3-3 with the Spanish side. The problems at the back have been evident since last season, and there will be question marks over Liverpool boss Klopp as to why he did not reinforce his defence in the summer. However, he has a chance of redemption as the January transfer window isn’t far away but who should the German try and sign?

The five times European Champions courted the Dutch defender massively in the summer and even broke the rules by having a meeting with him about his future in Blackpool of all places. He was obviously the number one target as Klopp tried to plug the leaky heart of his defence. However, it was not to be as Liverpool had to publicly apologise to Southampton amid allegations of “tapping up”.

But with Van Dijk now available again and Southampton willing to listen to offers the move is alive again. He would be a huge improvement on the current defence as he is strong, quick and knows how to organise a defence. Alongside this, he has the ability to bring the ball out of defence and play from the back. He may not be the only fix at the back Liverpool need.
