To say that Chelsea have had a couple of difficult seasons in the Premier League since Todd Boehly took over would be as accurate a statement as saying that the Sun would rise in the East tomorrow. Things have been disastrous at the Stamford Bridge.

If the pre-season is any indication to go by, it looks like the trauma is set to continue for the Blues fans. Enzo Maresca’s side have won just one of their pre-season games and it’s difficult to see them suddenly turn over a new leaf against Man City this weekend.

There have been very few silver linings for Chelsea in this period, if any. One definite positive has been the signing of Cole Palmer. Among all the transfers that Boehly has made at the Bridge, the ex-Man City star has been their biggest success.

Palmer scored 25 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for Mauricio Pochettino’s team last season. The Englishman’s top form earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s team for the Euros 2024 where he scored in the finals.

Rewarding him for the good work, Chelsea have decided to hand him a new contract. As per reliable journalist David Ornstein, the Blues have extended Cole Palmer’s contract until 2033 and have also given him a significant pay raise.

Handing out a nine-year contract to a player is unheard of. It’s an incredible gesture from Chelsea to show the player that they intend to build this entire project around him. Palmer will still be just 31 years old when the contract comes to an end.

Under Maresca, Chelsea will be hoping to return to winning ways. Their business in the transfer market has resembled that of a headless chicken but what is done is done. Let’s see if Palmer can continue his form from the previous season and live up to the promise that the club have shown in him in the years to come.
