What Juan Foyth Could Bring to Tottenham

Date:

It is always nice to hear about relatively unknown wonder kids, and excitement levels increase manifold if the youngsters are from South America. In comparison to young players of Europe, the South American football talents have often delivered on a consistent basis. So, that brings us to the player in question, Tottenham’s newest signing of this transfer window, Juan Foyth.

For the best part of this transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have been busy in extracting as much money as they could from Manchester City for Kyle Walker. Only recently have they splashed the cash on both Paulo Gazzaniga and Davinson Sanchez. With the transfer window set to end tomorrow, they have now made their fans happy and curious by finalising the transfer of Juan Foyth.

Estudiantes, Juan Foyth’s former side, have gone as far as arm twisting Tottenham into paying around £8Million by claiming PSG were front runners in signing the young lad. But, God bless Mauricio Pochettino with his persuasion skills and his Argentine roots, Juan Foyth himself was interested in signing for Tottenham.

Not much is known about the 19-year-old, but despite playing only a handful of games for Estudiantes, he has garnered a lot of interest for his displays in the Argentina U20 side. He was also part of the U-20 World Cup squad. Argentina were knocked out in the group stage, though Juan Foyth was one of the best players in the tournament. In Foyth, Spurs could expect someone in the mould of Alderweireld.

Juan Foyth is an excellent ball-playing centre-back with an eye for a decent pass. As already seen, defenders in Pochettino’s system are always expected to do more than just pass the ball to a nearby player. In Foyth, Spurs could have a perfect back up for their superstar defenders and could also seal the future of their defence for the best part of the next decade.

Though inexperienced, Foyth has shown good composure and confidence when he is on the ball. With claims that he considers Gerard Pique and Mats Hummels as his idols, it is evident from his play that he tries to emulate these World Cup winning defenders in every way.

From the few matches he has played, he is still yet to show any glaring weaknesses. The only weakness he so far has is his inexperience. For a title chasing team, it is safe to say that having an inexperienced young player with great potential is better than having second-grade players. With very less time left of this transfer window, and with Kevin Wimmer packing his bags to Stoke, Juan Foyth can fill the void and gain valuable experience.

Under Pochettino, we have seen good players like Alderweireld, Virgil van Dijk and Alli develop into world-class acts, with such qualities and attributes, Foyth could have a fruitful career in Europe. Critics, who say a player with only 600 minutes of professional football cannot be successful, should shut their mouth and see him become the next defensive superstar in World Football.
