Liverpool remain active in the market as they continue to hunt down the missing pieces of their puzzle. While new coach Arne Slot may have taken over following the departure of Jurgen Klopp, the team still needs some more new blood. As it stands, Liverpool are currently in the market for a new number ‘6’.

For some time now, the English Premier League side has been interested in signing a player who can not just contribute defensively but also possesses the vision to progress the play for the team. Given that such requirements are kind of hard to find in one player, it has taken them some time to find an adequate option.

According to Fabrizio Romano, however, the man that Liverpool are deciding to pursue is Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi. The 25-year-old Spanish midfielder has a contract until 2027 with the Basque club, but he seems to fit the profile that Slot wants at Liverpool.

As per a later update from the same journalist, the Reds are confident of signing the Spaniard and more talks between both Liverpool and Real Sociedad are expected to come up as well. As it stands, the player has a €60 million release clause that can be activated.

Transfermarkt values the 25-year-old currently at around €50m. The player’s release clause isn’t too far away from his valuation, making it a no-brainer for any club to trigger the clause and sign Zubimendi this summer.

Under new leadership, Liverpool have shown promise but they also lack in specific areas. Zubimendi’s arrival, should it happen, would allow the team to cover up those holes and hopefully secure the services of one of the best defensive midfielders in Spain right now.

During the European Championship, Zubimendi filled in for Rodri during the final against England. The player ended up providing a great performance covering for the number-one choice and has also been linked to Arsenal and FC Barcelona in the past. Only time will tell if his links to Liverpool provide any positive news.
