After having already incorporated Leny Yoro in their backline, Manchester United are now looking to further strengthen their defense ahead of the next season.

The Red Devils are looking for a new player for the left-back position in particular. This is especially the case as the signing of Sergio Reguilon could not provide the expected returns for the Premier League side.

As things stand, United only have Luke Shaw to play in this position, although Diogo Dalot can deputize for him as he can also play on this flank at a satisfactory level. According to the Spanish outlet SPORT, Ten Hag’s side has the former Chelsea defender, Marcos Alonso, in their sights to reinforce the left-back position.

This report claims that the defender still has a high value in England, because of the time he spent with Chelsea, winning a Premier League with the London side. Furthermore, his experience is another aspect that the Red Devils like.

In fact, Manchester United had already tried to sign the defender last year. However, at that time, Barcelona was not too willing to let him leave as they had not yet finalized Cancelo’s loan, and had only Balde to play as their left-back.

Alonso’s contract with Barcelona ended on 30th June, and since then, he has been without a club and is looking for a new destination to continue playing and enjoying football.

He had to spend a large part of the last season on the sidelines with a back issue, which also forced him to undergo surgery. But even before this injury, he was not getting a lot of time on the pitch with Xavi Hernandez.

Still, he made a significant number of appearances for the Catalans in his first season with them. But it needs to be kept in mind that his best performances in a Barcelona shirt came when Xavi had deployed him as a left-footed center-back.
