Spanish Giants Keeping Tabs on Van Gaal’s Man

Barcelona are keeping tabs on Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera ahead of a possible move to sign him in the January transfer window.

The Spaniard had signed for the Red Devils just in June last year from Athletic Bilbao but an offer from the Catalan giants could see him switch back to La Liga given his struggle for first-team football at the Old Trafford this season.

Herrera remained a regular starter for United in his breakthrough Premier League season, but the arrival of midfield maestros Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin to Old Trafford this summer has significantly reduced his playing time and he has managed just two first-team league appearances this term.

Herrera has represented Spain at Under-20, Under-21 and Under-23 levels but is yet to earn his maiden senior international cap.

Last year, FIFA had placed a year-long transfer ban on Barcelona for breaching regulations regarding the signing of foreign under-age players. With 83 days left on the ban, the Catalans will be looking to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window following the departure of some of their key players.

Summer signings Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal will join up with the team as soon as the ban is lifted.

Although Barcelona have been linked with a number of midfielders in recent times including Juventus playmaker Paul Pogba and Atletico Madrid’s Koke, Herrera appears to be a more realistic target for the Serie A champions.
