The season has almost reached its midpoint, and it’s time to start considering the top contenders for the prestigious Player of the Year award. This season has undoubtedly been one of the most unpredictable in Premier League history. At the top of the table, we have surprise leaders in the form of Leicester City, whereas last season’s champions, Chelsea, are surprisingly battling relegation after 16 games. There have been exceptional players who have lit up the English top flight with their sizzling performances. Let’s take a look at the top five contenders for the POTY award.
Kevin De Bruyne
The former Chelsea man’s return to the Premier League has been a fruitful one. The Belgian has set the league on fire with his impressive performances for the Citizens. The central attacking midfielder has both assisted and scored consistently for Manchester City. De Bruyne has been full of charisma for City, and if he continues to play at a similar pace, he could well be within reach of the prestigious award.
Olivier Giroud
The inclusion of Olivier Giroud may come as a surprise to many, but one cannot deny the fact that the Gunner has been amazing in recent matches. The Arsenal star was often criticized by fans and journalists for his lack of goals until the start of this season. The forward has shown glimpses of his capabilities this season, and if he continues to score at the same rate, he could have a shot at becoming Player of the Year award.
Mesut Ozil
Ever since he arrived at the Emirates, Ozil has been accused of playing far below his potential. However, things have changed this season. The central attacking midfielder has been the best in the Premier League, if not in Europe. He has been lively, creating opportunities with his deadly through balls. Whenever Ozil has the ball, Arsenal looks dangerous. If he extends his good run till the end of the season, there will be no doubt about his chances at the POTY award.
Riyad Mahrez
Leicester City has a gem of a player in the form of Riyad Mahrez. The 24-year-old attacking player has filled the spaces left by Eden Hazard this season. He is flying with confidence for the Foxes. Mahrez has consistently assisted and scored goals this season. One can only wonder how Leicester City managed to buy the player for less than a million, as he is worth at least 20 million based on his current form. If he stays at Leicester after the January transfer window, he will be one of the favorites to win the POTY award.
Jamie Vardy
There are no words to describe Vardy’s performances this season. His performances have been stupendously fantastic. He has been the most consistent scorer the EPL has ever seen. He currently maintains a goal per game ratio, and if he carries on at such an astounding rate, one can expect him to break many records this season. His partnership with Riyad Mahrez has been fantastic, and he will be the favorite to land the Player of the Season award.
