What Álvaro Morata will Bring to Chelsea

On Friday Chelsea officially confirmed the signing of Real Madrid striker, Álvaro Morata. The Spaniard joins the Blues on a 5-year deal worth £58m. The Spaniard is Chelsea’s 2nd signing of the summer after the Blues signed Antonio Rüdiger a few weeks ago.

Despite starting most games on the bench, the Spaniard equalled Zidane’s first choice striker of Karim Benzema in goals scored. The 24-year old averaged a goal nearly every game at the Bernabéu, scoring 20 goals in 39 appearances.

Real Madrid are now left with no competent striker to back up Benzema. Regardless, what’s Madrid’s loss is Chelsea’s gain as Álvaro Morata has the potential to become one of the best strikers in the Premier League.

Morata’s wide range of attributes allows him to bring a lot to Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard is tall, quick, powerful and technically gifted. His pace means he’ll be able to stretch defences in the Premier League, giving Cesc Fàbregas the option of pinging long balls over the top. This means Morata could operate in the wide channels thus pulling opposition centre backs out of position.

Álvaro’s power and technical attributes mean that as the focal point of the attack he could hold up play efficiently. His strength will allow him to engage in aerial duels with Premier League CBs, win the ball and wait for support from his teammates. The former Madrid forward has also showcased his ability to link up with others well, often playing through balls to his accompanying wingers.

Above all, Álvaro Morata is a versatile forward. He can play through the middle and on either of the flanks. For both club and country, the Spaniard has played as a winger at times, often providing assists from those positions. This versatility gives Antonio Conte the option of playing him anywhere in the front three, alongside another out and out striker in either Diego Costa or Michi Batshauyi. Furthermore, the signing of Morata will not hinder Conte’s 3-4-3, it will only enhance its fluidity.

Álvaro Morata can provide everything Diego Costa can plus more. Many cite Costa’s aggression, tenacity and work rate as his best quality, but Morata offers that at a quicker pace. Meaning Chelsea’s strike force has been significantly strengthened and the young age of Morata presents him as a more long-term option at Chelsea.

Chelsea fans should be excited with the £58m signing as he significantly improves a title-winning team. As well as all his physical traits, Morata is an honest and diligent player that gives his all for the sake of the team. He doesn’t mind sacrificing personal glory for the benefit of the team and will religiously follow instructions from the coach.

In my humble opinion, Álvaro Morata will seamlessly adjust to the style of play in the Premier League because he has the intelligence to match his suitable physical traits. Chelsea have signed the best striker available on the market today and he will compliment an already fine-tuned team.
