Injury plagued Liverpool have made Bayern Munich forward Mari Gotze their prime transfer target in a bid to bolster their leaking defence, trusted British news source Metro revealed.

The 23-year-old starlet has dispatched the ball inside two poles on five occasions aside from providing 3 assists in the 9 games has started in the season thus far. The talented striker, who is a skilled dribbler and also throws key passes has a contract with Bayern Munich that runs until summer of 2017.

With one and a half year still to go, Gotze has refused to initiate contract renewal talks with the Allianz Arena club, insisting that he will take a decision after discussing the matter with new coach Carlo Ancelotti, who is all set to replace Pep Guardiola at the end of the season.

The German professional further added that he will only renew the contract he is needed at the club. Otherwise, he’ll force a move out of German outfit.

Talking to German media outlet Sport Bild, Gotze ruled out an immediate move to the Premier League but opened the door for a summer transfer move to Anfield, inviting Jurgen Klopp to make a formal approach if he wants him in the Reds’ lineup.

Liverpool are closely monitoring his contract saga but in the current scenario, they have almost no chance of signing him before summer. However until then, they can pursue other targets.

Bayern Munich’s sporting director was quick to quash the rumors terming them as baseless and nonsense.

There are good chances that the German will decide to make a switch to Jürgen Klopp managed Liverpool than any other club as the compatriot boss had played a pivotal role in establishing him as a top Bundesliga talent at Borussia Dortmund. Under Klopp, he can revive his career that somewhat has stalled since making a switch to rival Bayern Munich in 2013, although there haven been many highlights, including a World Cup-winning goal against Argentina in 2014.

Gotze making a switch to Anfield will mean a lot for the Reds as he has the versatility and the style of play they need most. The prolific goalscorer and provider, who registered 10 goals and nine assists in his final Bundesliga campaign with Dortmund can be equally useful in a central role as well as out wide, and can help Liverpool resolve problems with the attacking third.
